      With the upheaval against the Bábís in Zanján underway, the governor began recruiting men from the surrounding villages to attack the Bábís. Nabíl records: “That day more than three thousand men were recruited by the governor from the surrounding villages of Zanján”.36_ACT14

      The Fort of ‘Alí-Mardán Khán

      Seeing this movement organized by the governor, some of Hujjat’s key followers met with him and, according to Nabíl:

      … urged him, as a precautionary measure, to transfer his residence to the fort of ‘Alí-Mardán Khán, adjacent to the quarter in which he was residing. Hujjat gave his consent and ordered their women and children, together with such provisions as they might require, be taken to the fort.
