      Hujjat’s approach to Islám is different from the mainstream

      Hujjat was known from his early days to question the mainstream religious thinking in particular their interpretations and application of Islamic law. As a mujtahid he often applied Islamic law in ways that others did not.5_ACT14 His insistence on strictly refraining from self-indulgence and his outspokenness meant that he invariably ran into conflict with the established system of Islamic clergy. This meant that while he often had the respect and love of the common people everywhere he went, the corrupt clergy and government officials bitterly resented him. This was particularly true in his hometown of Zanján. [DB 8-9, Section 4]. 6_ACT14

      Hujjat’s becomes a Bábí and his first detention in the Capital

      The enmity of the ‘ulamá of Zanján towards Hujjat greatly worsened when he became a follower of the Báb, particularly because of Hujjat’s outspokenness [DB 8-9, Section 4]. The ‘ulamá of Zanján petitioned the Grand Vazír and Sháh, who at that time were Hájí Mírzá Áqásí and Muhammad Sháh, to summon Hujjat to the capital.
