      The Mu’tamid Rescues the Báb

As soon as the Mu’tamid heard about the death sentence he came up with a rescue plan. 55ACT5 He instructed that at the hour of sunset, the Báb be escorted by five hundred horsemen of the Mu’tamid’s personal mounted bodyguard, and they should leave from the gate of the city and head towards Tihrán. At about every three to four miles on the journey, one hundred of the horsemen were ordered to leave and return, such that after some miles outside the city, only ten horsemen were left escorting the Báb. These were the Mu’tamid’s most trusted guards. They were told that with utmost secrecy via an unfrequented route, they were to bring the Báb back to Isfáhán and take Him to the Mu’tamid’s private residence [called ‘Imárat-i-Khurshíd
]. Besides the Mu’tamid, the ten guards and three others, no one else knew that the Báb was back in Isfáhán. Everyone else thought He had been taken to Tihrán. The three others who knew about the Báb’s location were His three amanuenses, whom the Báb had previously sent to Isfáhán from Shíráz: Mullá ‘Abdu’l-Karím of Qazvín [Mullá ‘Abdu’l-Karím-i-Qazvíní
], Siyyid Husayn of Yazd [Siyyid Husayn-i-Yazdí
] and Shaykh Hasan of Zunúz [Shaykh Hasan-i-Zunúzí]. 56ACT5 Of all the believers, only these three knew the whereabouts of the Báb and were the only ones permitted to see Him. 57ACT5
