when they disputed regarding the Báb and His Teachings. This change in Mírzá Jání was so evident and incredible that even his adversaries acknowledged it. 86ACT5
That same evening, one person who came to visit was a close friend of Mullá Husayn’s. His name was Siyyid ‘Abdu’l-Báqí
and he was considered to be highly learned. He sat and listened to the Báb, but the revelation of verses had no effect on his heart and soul. He left that evening, without even asking who the Báb was. 87ACT5 The lesson is this: one can have the sharpest of eyes, but seeing is not the same as insight; one can have the keenest of ears, but hearing is not the same as listening and understanding. And these are among the many tests when crossing the Bridge of Sirát.

The Four Brothers of Káshán and their Crossing of the Bridge

Mírzá Jání was one of four brothers. They end up following different paths: two become devoted believers of both the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh to the end of their lives [Mírzá Jání was one of these two], whereas the third, although claiming to be a believer, is a lost soul that causes a lot of trouble and meets a sad end. The end of the fourth brother is unknown. 88ACT5
      1. Mírzá Jání: The first of the brothers to believe in the Báb. He hosts the Báb in Káshán and becomes a devoted believer and an active teacher of the Cause. He is eventually martyred.
      2. Muhammad-Ismáíl
: The full brother of Mírzá Jání, who is present when the Báb stays at Jání’s house in Káshán. He also becomes a devout believer and is given the titles of Dhabíh
[Sacrifice] and Anís [Companion] by Bahá’u’lláh.
      3. Ahmad
: A half-brother of Mírzá Jání. Although he professed belief in the Báb, he is a lost soul and a mischief maker. He spent much time with Bahá’u’lláh in Adrianople and was the recipient of the Fársí Tablet of Ahmad [parts of this tablet are translated as Gleanings CLII & CLIII]. He sadly did not change his ways to end of his life.
