      Section One: The First Awakener

      The First Awakener: Shaykh Ahmad

      Shaykh Ahmad
was born in 1753 in Ahsá
(which is on the east coast of Saudi Arabia besides the island of Bahrain). When he was about forty, Shaykh Ahmad sensed that the Promised One prophesied in Islam would soon appear. He also understood that most people had lost touch with the spiritual content of the teachings of Islam and only practiced its cultural forms and rituals.

2 He is therefore known as Shaykh Ahmad-i-Ahsá’í meaning Shaykh Ahmad from Ahsá. Shaykh is a title [means elder or head] and usually used as a title for a leader of a group. Because Ahsá was part of Bahrain at the time of Shaykh Ahmad, he is sometimes also called Shaykh Ahmad-i-Bahrayní [e.g. in Dawn-Breakers Chapter 15, p276]. Ahsá is now part of the Saudi Arabia and no longer part of Bahrain.
