We know this call of revelation to humanity reached fruition on the eve of 22 May 1844.
22 May 1844
We have a record from one other witness of that momentous evening on 22 May 1844 when Mullá Husayn first visited the Báb’s House – this is from the Báb’s wife, Khadíjih Bagum. Many years after that event, she remembered it in these words:
What an extraordinary night that was! The Báb said to me: “Tonight we will entertain a dear guest.” His whole being was ablaze. I was most eager to hear what He had to say, but He turned to me and told me: “It is better if you go and sleep.” I did not wish to disobey Him, but remained awake all night and could hear His blessed voice until the morning, conversing with the Bábu’l-Báb, chanting verses, and presenting proofs and arguments. 110ACT2
Khadíjih Bagum then recalls how as days went on, other unknown guests would come to the house and how the Báb engaged and conversed with them in the same way as with Mullá Husayn. Those guests in time became the other Letters of the Living.
Station of Khadíjih Bagum, the wife of the Báb
Khadíjih Bagum’s degree of faith and her rank is attested by Nabíl:
The wife of the Báb … perceived at the earliest dawn of His Revelation the glory and uniqueness of His Mission and felt from the very beginning the intensity of its force. No one except Táhirih, among the women of her generation, surpassed her in the spontaneous character of her devotion nor excelled the fervour of her faith. 109ACT2
Both the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh extol Khadíjih Bagum’s high station in several tablets and prayers. 112ACT2
