The Day of Resurrection: Coming of Twin Manifestations

For the Shí’a, the Day of Resurrection is to be ushered in by the return of the twelfth Imám, the Qá’im

followed by the return of Imám Husayn and his hosts. For the Sunní, the Day of Resurrection will see the coming of the Mahdí

[One who is guided], and the return of Jesus Christ. For both Shí’a and Sunní, at that time, the mountains will crumble, stars will fall, the dead will arise [resurrection], judgement will be passed on all things, and all things will be renewed forever.

Shaykh Ahmad and Siyyid Kázim had taught that such prophecies had metaphoric and spiritual meanings rather than literal physical ones. They also confirmed that there would be two Manifestations. In fact, Siyyid Kázim told his disciples:

For soon after the first trumpet-blast which is to smite the earth with extermination and death, there will be sounded again yet, another call, at which all things will be quickened and revived. … Verily I say, after the Qá’im, the Qayyúm

[the Self-Subsisting] will be made manifest. For when the star of the Former has set, the sun of the beauty of Husayn will rise and illuminate the whole world.

The First Trumpet Blast – the Qá’im

On the eve of 22 May 1844, the First Trumpet Blast was sounded – the Qá’im / the Mahdí arose. He claimed the title of “the Báb,” which means the Gate. He was the gate to a new Revelation. He was the gate that closed the cycle of prophecy and opened the cycle of fulfillment for all religions. But His main role was as the gate to the Qayyúm, the One Who was to arise after Him; the One greater than Himself. Together they inaugurated the age of maturation of the human race and brought teachings to build a new race of men and a global ever-advancing civilization, the like of which we can only dimly imagine.

It is this which has been described metaphorically in the Scriptures of old as the Day of Resurrection and Judgement. In this Day, the mountains of old beliefs will crumble; the stars of guidance [the leaders] will fall and mislead people instead of guiding them; the spiritually dead will be awakened from the graves of ignorance
