      Living (hurĂşf-i-hayy
      43ACT2 ).

Upon his return to his companions Mullá Husayn remained silent and pretended not to have attained the object of his quest. As instructed by the Báb, he set up classes at the mosque and continued his usual prayer practices. Soon many of Shaykh Ahmad and Siyyid Kázim’s followers who had heard about Mullá Husayn’s arrival started attending his classes. Some other Shí’a clergy and city officials also joined the classes. All marveled at the spirit and knowledge of this youth but remained unaware of the source of his inspiration and knowledge.

During this period, Mullá Husayn and the Báb met regularly in secret, which Mullá Husayn describes in these words:

37 hurúf means “letters” [as in letters of the alphabet] and hayy means ”the living”, hence Letters of the Living.
