      hometown, Zanján. From the very first day of his return, Hujjat received vast support from the general population, and this aroused the jealousy of the other ‘ulamá
      [learned clergy]. This was particularly heightened, because Hujjat not only taught and exhorted the people to follow the teachings of the Qur’án but embodied these high principles in his own life. He called out the many forms of decadence and corruption which were rampant amongst the other ‘ulamá , His independence of thought and outspokenness was a big thorn in their side. Hujjat taught in this fashion for the next seventeen years. His teaching was so effective that he gathered a large following who built a masjid [mosque] in Zanján just for him to teach in. His disciples soon surpassed in knowledge and understanding the other leading ‘ulamá of Zanján. All this earned him the highly esteemed title of Hujjat’ul-Islam
