Yazd: Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ
Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ was one of the Letters of the Living. He was also one of the three main amanuenses of the BĂĄb (the other two being MullĂĄ âAbduâl-KarĂm-i-QazvinĂ and Shaykh Hasan-i-ZunĂșzĂ). An amanuensis is a secretary who writes and copies what is dictated. He is therefore sometimes known as Siyyid Husayn-i-KĂĄtib of YazdĂ [kĂĄtib means scribe] He was also known by the title AzĂz [means dear or beloved].
Briefly, Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ first meets the BĂĄb in 1844, when he becomes one of the Letters of the Living. He returns to ShĂrĂĄz in the summer of 1846, after the BĂĄb had returned from his pilgrimage (hajj). From then on, he, together with MullĂĄ âAbduâl-KarĂm and Shaykh Hasan-i-ZunĂșzĂ, becomes an amanuensis of the BĂĄb. The BĂĄb instructs all three of His amanuenses to go to IsfĂ hĂĄn and wait there for Him (Dawn-Breakers Chapter 9, p192-193).
During the BĂĄbâs stay in IsfĂĄhĂĄn, these three amanuenses were always close to Him and during the latter part of His stay, when the BĂĄb was kept by the Muâtamid in secret at the Muâtamidâs residence, only these three knew His whereabouts (Dawn-Breakers Chapter 10, p212). As the time of the BĂĄb in IsfĂĄhĂĄn drew to a close, the BĂĄb instructed Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ to go to KĂĄshĂĄn and wait there for Him, which he did. He was therefore present at HĂĄjĂ MĂrzĂĄ JĂĄnĂâs place and able to record the BĂĄbâs revelation of verses there (Dawn-Breakers Chapter 11, p219).
After KĂĄshĂĄn, Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ, his brother Siyyid Hasan, and the other two amanuenses, MullĂĄ âAbduâl-KarĂm and Shaykh Hasan-i-ZunĂșzĂ, join the BĂĄb, at Kulayn, the village close by TihrĂĄn (Dawn-Breakers Chapter 12, p227). The BĂĄb was being held there, because the plan was for Him to be escorted to TihrĂĄn to meet the ShĂĄh. This did not happen, because of the machinations of the Grand VazĂr HĂĄjĂ MĂrzĂĄ ĂqĂĄsĂ, who dissuaded the ShĂĄh. When the order of the ShĂĄh was received sending the BĂĄb to the prison of MĂĄh-KĂș, the BĂĄb chose Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ and his brother Siyyid Hasan as His companions. Siyyid Hasan acted as the attendant and Siyyid Husayn-i-YazdĂ as the secretary of the BĂĄb from then on both in the prison of MĂĄh-KĂș and later in the prison of ChihrĂq. These two brothers were with the BĂĄb when the news of the tragic events at Fort Shaykh TabarsĂ reached ChihrĂq. NabĂl records that their father Siyyid Ahmad and their younger brother,
