Qum
The main route from Káshán to Tihrán is through Qum. Qum is place of special pilgrimage for the Shí’a as it has the Shrine where the sister of Imám Ridá [the eighth Imám] is buried. Called the Haram-i-Ma’súmih [Shrine of the Immaculate One], this Shrine is an inviolable sanctuary, and even criminals can seek sanctuary there and be immune from arrest. The guards escorting the Báb to Tihrán had been ordered to avoid going into any major city, and avoiding Qum was high on this list.
