be asked to get rid of Quddús. Siyyid Javád, who held a much higher position than Karím Khán, told the governor: “How often have I advised you, to ignore the whisperings of this evil plotter! My forbearance has emboldened him. Let him beware lest he overstep his bounds. … He gives himself the liberty of committing the foulest deeds, and refuses to allow me to receive and honour in my own home a man of such integrity, such learning and nobleness. Should he refuse to desist from this practice, let him be warned that the worst elements of the city will, at my instigation, expel him from Kirman.” 58ACT4 This stopped the efforts of Karím Khán against Quddús. In the privacy of his own home, Siyyid Javád had already declared his faith in the Báb to Quddús, but said he was going to conceal his belief, in the hope of being able to guard more effectively the interests of the newly established community. And this is what Siyyid Javád did to the last of his earthly days. If it wasn’t for his restraining influence, the harm that Karím Khán and his followers would have been able to inflict on the Bábí community would have been incalculable over the years. What made Karím Khán’s influence so particularly pernicious was that he subverted Shaykh Ahmad and Siyyid Kázim’s message. The very teachings whose goal was to prepare the people for the coming of the Promised One were subverted and now used to oppose and persecute the Promised One. Karím Khán was seen by the Bábí’s as the Dajjál
59ACT4 foretold to come and oppose the Promised One.
