      Desecration of Hujjat’s body

The governor and the ‘ulamá of Zanján wanted to show the people their full victory over the Bábís by displaying and desecrating the body of Hujjat. But they could not find its burial spot. They tried various kinds of torture on the surviving companions, but no one would reveal the location. At last, the governor got a hold of Hujjat’s seven-year-old son, and through lies and manipulation, got him to reveal the location where Hujjat’s body was buried. The governor then ordered that the body be exhumed and “it be dragged with a rope, to the sound of drums and trumpets, through the streets of Zanjan. For three days and three nights, unspeakable injuries were heaped upon the body, which lay exposed to the eyes of the people in the maydán [public square]. On the third night, it was reported that a number of horsemen had succeeded in carrying away the remnants of the corpse to a place of safety in the direction of Qazvín.” 101_ACT14
